What this calculator does
This calculator estimates flooring square footage for one or more identical rectangular rooms.
Enter room length, room width, and the number of identical rooms. The result shows the base area and the waste-adjusted area for planning material coverage.
Formula used
Base square footage equals room length times room width times room quantity. The selected waste percentage is then applied to the base square footage.
Waste allowance
Waste increases the base square footage to account for cuts, layout, pattern matching, damaged pieces, and installation loss. Compare the result with box coverage because flooring is often sold by carton.
Measurement reminder
Measure each room carefully and include closets or alcoves when they will receive the same flooring. For rooms with different sizes, calculate each room separately or add their areas before planning the order.
Frequently asked questions
- How much extra flooring should I buy?
- Use the waste setting as a planning allowance for cuts and layout. The right cushion depends on product type, pattern, room shape, and installer guidance.
- Does this calculator handle different room sizes?
- It handles identical rooms with one room quantity field. For different room sizes, calculate each room separately and combine the results.
- Is the result the number of boxes to buy?
- No. The result is square footage. Divide by the product's carton coverage and round up according to supplier guidance.
